Mainstream hip hop artists can’t hold a candle to underground rap music. While they may have slick production and huge promotional budgets, true hip hop heads know that the best rappers are from the underground. Even successful mainstream artists like Eminem, Mos Def and Talib Kweli all got their start doing underground shows and freestyle rap battles. Here’s my short list of the must have underground rap music tracks and the arists behind them…
Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious. One of the broadest musical efforts made, period. Produced by Chief Xcel, the music ranges from hard funk to heavy metal to soft rock within a few short tracks. MC Gift of Gab adds an impressive level of lyrical prowess to the beats, brooding on such topics as the feelings of joy found at the strangest times, standard rap battle punchlines, and his possible nomination for president. A groundbreaking, fresh look at where underground hip hop is headed.
The Undisputed Truth by Brother Ali. This rapper is a throwback to the golden era of hip hop. Brother Ali is one of the most lyrical, spiritual and downright talented rappers in underground rap today. His approaches on the album range from covering classic blues tracks such as Nina Simone’s “Uncle Sam Goddamn” to dark, metaphorical love songs such as “Here” in which he compares a his personality to that of an old house. In “Walking Away,” Ali broods on the need for him to walk away from ex-wife and the painful experiences associated with it. It’s both an honest look at the mistakes of a life, and its hopes and dreams for the future.
Black Star by Mos Def and Talib Kweli. OK, so this album’s success was on par with mainstream releases, but the spirit of the record is pure underground rap music. In fact, throughout Black Star you can hear Mos and Kweli urging MCs to quit the simple gangsta approach and start developing their talents in hip hop. As Kweli himself says “Where are the cats with raw skills? They’re in the underground.” While both rappers have sinced exploded in popularity, they still remain loyal to their roots.
For anyone interested in hearing underground rap music at its finest, don’t miss these three albums. They represent hip hop at its finest: honest, funky, multifaceted and gripping. Whether it’s the soul of Brother Ali, the musical soundscapes of Blackalicious or the social commentary of Black Star, these three artists hail from the underground and here to stay.

Making Rap Beats Online – Become A Producer
For years I would listen to my favorite rap and hip-hop tracks and think how easy it would be to make your own rap beats. I have since found out that many people feel the same way, and that most people think they can make fat tracks. How come there is such a shortage of producers then? Along the way, I realized that it’s because of the high barriers to entry becoming a producer has traditionally had. In the past, if you wanted to make rap beats, you had to save up a few thousand dollars and go to a studio, or pay a producer while going to a studio. Even in the past 10 years, the only option was to use overpriced desktop beat makers, which still left beginners hundreds of dollars in the hole.
The solution to this problem came with the rise of the internet. More specifically, the epic rise of social media. Websites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter set the standard for how we interact with each other online. Together with people’s love for music, the first websites that let you make rap beats online emerged. These “social music” websites were the first of their kind. Users could log on, whip up a beat using an online rap beats maker, and then publish and share that beat with friends on the website. This lead to many underground producers and rappers becoming discovered and scoring ‘real life’ record deals.
This kind of “rags to riches” story has been made possible by the internet. The community aspect of the internet and online rap beat makers give anybody who wants one a chance to succeed at being a rap producer. With online beat makers, you shorten the learning curve of making rap beats online dramatically. In the past, lots of time and money must be spent before you can even make your first rap beat. Today, all it takes is a simple membership to a site that lets you make rap beats online and you’re good to go.
However, not all online beat makers are created equally… so what should you look for in a quality site? One of the most important things to me is the ease of use. See, the reason most people don’t like going to a studio or using desktop software is how technically complex it is… an o
